University of Strathclyde, Department of Sport, Culture and the Arts

The Department of Sport, Culture and the Arts formed in 2004 from a partnership between the Scottish School of Sport Studies and Applied Arts. It comprises a group of academic and research staff and students with interests across a wide range of physical and creative activities.

Staff come from a variety of backgrounds, including academic, professional and teaching, and have developed highly popular degree programmes in sport and physical activity, community arts and outdoor education (elements of which are currently being integrated with the sport course). A further major part of the Department's work is in delivering the physical education elements of both Primary and Secondary teacher training programmes. Postgraduate developments are also underway.

The Department's Physical Activity for Health research group is led by Professor Nanette Mutrie. This group’s research links with the Faculty’s research theme of Wellbeing (Physical, Cultural and Psychological). Research embraces a number of facets of the 'physically activity' spectrum e.g. the use of pedometers to promote walking, coach education, evaluation of the active schools programme, the relevance of degrees in the outdoor sector, and includes the SPARColl team (Scottish Physical Activity Research collaboration.
