The Promotion of Physical Activity in Secure Accommodation

This briefing paper looks at the evidence base and discusses the promotion of physical activity in secure accommodation.

The term secure accommodation represents the range of secure institutions (prisons, young offender institutions, secure hospitals) that hodl varied groups who have been compulsorily imprisoned by courts for offences against the law. For the past 20 years there has been a growing interest of the health status of those in secure accommodation involving efforts to respectivelyt expand and improve core health care services, encourage health improvement activities and the holistic notion of the 'health promoting prison'.

Physical activity prommotion has a long tradition in secure accommodation and continues to be a vehilcle through which physical and mental health can be promoted. This paper explores the evidence, barriers and benefits of physical activity promotion within secure accommodation.
