REPs Exercise Professionals Supporting the Healthcare Sector.

This leaflet provides a quick guide to REPs and the role of exercise professionals in supporting the healthcare sector in promoting the health and wellbeing for people living with long-term medical conditions.

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) is an independent public register which recognises the qualifications and expertise of health enhancing exercise instructors in the UK. One of our key functions is to provide a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the health and fitness industry’s agreed National Occupational Standards (NOS).

Membership of REPs provides assurance and confidence to consumers, employers and health professionals that all registered exercise professionals are appropriately qualified and have the knowledge, competence and skills to perform specific roles.

Qualification Level of Instructors:

The Exercise Referral Instructor (Level 3) An exercise referral instructor’s role includes designing, monitoring, adapting and implementing exercise programmes for individual clients with a range of medical conditions.

The Specialist Exercise Instructor (Level 4) The specialist exercise instructor is able to demonstrate that they have met the Level 4 National Occupational Standards in one or more medical areas.

Specific medical areas covered by the specialist exercise instructors:

  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Falls Prevention
  • Low Back Pain
  • Stroke
