Promoting Swimming Activities

This briefing paper looks at the evidence base and discusses swimming activities in the context of physical activity promotion.

Support for the promotion of swimming as an activity has come from a range of policy sources. Within the context of an ‘active living’ approach to physical activity promotion, it has been cited along with walking, cycling and gardening as a significant form of activity that can promote physical and mental health in various ways and is supported as a favoured means on the basis that it is relatively cheap and accessible and does not require particularly expensive equipment or great skill.

This paper explores the evidence and policy context through which swimming is promoted.
