Physical Activity and Health: Adolescents and Young Adults (A Report of the Surgeon General)

Report summarising the findings of the Physical Activity and Health report (America) focusing on information related to adolescents and young people.

Factsheet summarises findings of report on physical activity and health related to adolescents and young people in America.  Key findings include that all young people benefit from physical activity and that this activity does not need to be strenuous to be beneficial.

Recommended daily guidelines are stated and benefits of physical activity are summarised.  Facts on young people and adolescent participation in physical activity are summarised, with the overall trend of declining participation with increases in age being noted.  There also has been a general decrease in participation from 1991 to 1995.

Implications:  Interventions have been observed to be effective, however parental support is essential in order to increase children’s participation.  Communities are encouraged to increase opportunities for physical activity, provide role models for young people, employ sports specialists to run clubs and to widen accessibility to facilities.

Communities should also provide activities to specifically cater to varied groups, such as females and ethnic minorities.
