Physical Activity and Adolescent Girls: Workforce Training Needs Analysis Summary

Summary of research undertaken by NHS Health Scotland in order to establish the needs of a workforce who are involved in promoting physical activity to adolescent girls.

Healthier Scotland (Scottish Government) and NHS, Health Scotland.

A summary of research conducting in Scotland in order to assess the needs of the workforce who provide opportunities for physical activity for adolescent females.

Aim: To establish and focus on the training and support needs for those involved in promoting physical activity for adolescent females.

Method:  A number of methods were used:  literature searches, interviewing stakeholders, running focus groups and surveying workforce.

Results:  A number of themes arose from the research, such as mainstreaming of girls’ physical activity participation, importance of role models, the role of ‘competition’ in adolescent girls’ physical activity and the importance of transitions and links.

Implications:  Training should be provided to the workforce on carrying out consultations with adolescent females. The workforce should be encouraged to emphasise the importance of physical activity for the target group and encourage their organisations to promote and express positive messages.  Schools should be encouraged to use their staff resources in order to gain positive outcomes, especially in terms of providing positive role models.  Due to the evidence for weak links between primary and secondary school physical activity levels, and between secondary school and the community, it is suggested that girls should be equipped with skills to undertake physical activity outside of the school setting.  Links should be strengthened between school and the wider community (using the Active Schools Network).  Further research should be carried out in order to provide clear policy advice, update models/frameworks and focus on under-researched areas.
