Proceedings from the 4th Annual National Scottish Physical Activity and Health Alliance Conference, February 2010.

Getting the Message Across

The 2010 PAHA Conference was openned by the Minister for Sport and Public Health, Shona Robison.

Developed under the theme of “Getting the Message Across” the conference aimed to inspire, motivate and bring alive some of the latest developments in the Physical Activity and Health agenda in Scotland. Including the recent publication of the Final Statement from the physical activity review group.

Plenary Presentations

The conference featured a series of plenary presentations:

A Call to Action 

Final Statement form the National Physical Activity 5 Year Review Group. Mary Allison, Director of Programme Design & Delivery, NHS Health Scotland.

UK Physical Activity Guidelines

An overview of the scientific evidence and recommendations that form the basis of UK and European Physical Activity Guidelines. Prof Nanette Mutrie, University of Strathclyde, Director of SPARColl.

Active Nation – A Games Legacy for Scotland

An overview of the ‘Active Nation’ Programme Ann Thomson, Active Nation Programme Manager, Scottish Government.

Money Talks!...The Economic Cost of Inactivity

Cost analysis of physical activity versus inactivity in Scotland. Dr Charlie Foster, University of Oxford.

Parallel Sessions

The plenary presentations were complimented by seven parallel sessions:

Fit For Girls – Bucking the Trend

This session focused on the latest findings from the recent evaluation of the Fit for Girls Programme. Hazel Williamson, Youth Sports Trust & Michelle Livingston, sportscotland.

UK Physical Activity Guidelines – Early Years, Children and Young People.

This session focused on the UK Physical Activity Guidelines for Early Years aged 0-5 years and Children aged 5-18 years. Prof John Reilly, University of Glasgow.

UK Physical Activity Guidelines – Adults

This session focused on the UK Physical Activity Guidelines for Adults aged 16-64 years. Prof Nanette Mutrie, University of Strathclyde, Director of SPARColl.

UK Physical Activity Guidelines – Older Adults

This workshop session focused on the UK Physical Activity Guidelines for Older Adults aged 65+ years. Dr Dawn Sketlon, Glasgow Caledonian University.

Raising the Issue of Physical Activity, Healthy Weight & Obesity

This session focused on raising the issue of inactivity, healthy weight or obesity. David Elder, NHS Health Scotland.

Games Legacy – Towards an Active Nation

This session explored a potential games legacy can be developed for local areas. Maureen Kid, NHS Health Scotland.

Promoting Physical Activity in the Outdoor Environment

This session explored a range of opportunities to encourage people to be more active outdoors. Kevin Lafferty, Forestry Commission Scotland and Peter Rawcliffe, SNH on behalf of the Green Exercise Partnership.

Active Factor Awards

In addition, the conference also hosted the awards ceremony for the Physical Activity and Health Alliance 'Active Factor' Awards Scheme. These awards were presented at the conference for the very first time in recognition of outstanding efforts that reflect the implementation of the national strategy, ‘Let’s Make Scotland More Active’.
