NHS Highland Play@home Evaluation Report

The play@home programme was officially launched across the Highlands in June 2002 with the first families receiving booklets being those whose babies were born after 1st August. Now that the ‘original’ babies have received both their toddler and pre-school booklet, the pilot of the programme is complete and this report draws together the process of the roll out of play@home in the Highlands.

The evaluation of play@home was commissioned by the Highland Council and the Highland Health Board and was carried out over the three-year period 2002-2005. The Childhood and Families: research & development centre (CAF) within the University of Strathclyde undertook the evaluation itself, taking responsibility for its design and co-ordination. The main purpose of the evaluation was to gauge the impact of play@home on families and professionals in the Highlands. It was ‘formative’, in that outcomes were fed back regularly so that they could influence the programme along its course; and ‘summative’ in providing progress reports to the Steering Group. This report brings early findings together with data from the final year, particularly the final parent survey cohort and the focus group of teenage mothers.
