London 2012: A Legacy for Disabled People.

Setting new standards, changing perceptions.

Published by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), this document lays out the Government’s vision and commitment to delivering a lasting legacy for disabled people from hosting the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This report explains how the Government plans to use the power of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to transform the life experience of disabled people and to accelerate progress towards the Government’s goal of achieving disability equality by 2025. Outlined in the report are plans to:

  • Publish good practice guidance for the promotion of physical activity for disabled people.
  • Increase disabled people’s participation in sport through a Sport England investment of £10 million over the next two years.
  • Strengthen talent pathways for young disabled athletes through the new national strategy ‘Playground to Podium’.
  • Deliver 1,000 accessible sports and fitness facilities across the UK; and
  • Pilot a £2 million ‘Access to Volunteering’ fund in London, the North West and the West Midlands to provide grants to support volunteering organisations involving more disabled volunteers.
