Let's Make Scotland More Active:
This presentation provides a breif reminder of the key elements from the national physical activity strategy Let's Make Scotland More Active, restating the vision, targets and values of the strategy.
2008 Scottish Health Survey Results:
Results from the 2008 Scottish Health Survey, conclude that in general activity levels for adults have increased over the years, whilst the activity levels of children - teenage girls in particular have drastically declined.
Implementation Progress:
Progress with implementation has been achieved through:
- Sustained government campaigns (Healthy Living, Take Life On).
- National projects working in the right areas with good initial findings.
- Contribution of physical activity to national outcomes (where no specific physical activity outcome exists).
- The development of 24 local area physical activity plans.
- 3000 local staff have joined the Physical Activity and Health Alliance.
Limited progress has been achieved:
- Via short-term projects and initiatives.
- As there has been limited engagement in environmental re-design.
- As there is no specific outcome defined in National Performance Framework or NHS HEAT Target.
- As there is no clear accountability or leadership for physical activity.
- Due to a lack of sustained evaluations.
Challenges for The Next Five Years:
- Need to ensure that the opportunities of the next 5 years will meet the needs of those yet to be reached, namely older people, women of all ages and girls in particular.
- Need to reduce the risk that we could widen inequalities by meeting (mainly) the needs of those who have already reached the PA target (Men 16-44).
