Lessons from Evaluations of Sport and Physical Activity Programmes for Young People

This review of research literature on evaluations of large-scale sport and physical activity programmes was commissioned by sportscotland as part of a larger evaluation of Active Schools.

The goals of the review were both general and specific, and the research was to provide a general overview of the state of knowledge and research practice on large-scale evaluations as well as to provide concrete recommendations to inform the design of the Active Schools evaluation.

The review sought to address a series of questions:

  • What do we know about the impact of large-scale sport and physical activity programmes?
  • How credible is the available research – is the methodology rigorous enough to support the conclusions?
  • To what extent have causal links (rather than correlations) been demonstrated?
  • What do we still need to know to inform policy more effectively?
  • What policy conclusions can be drawn and what are their practical implications?
