Health Behaviour in School-aged Children

This is a World Health Organisation collaborative cross-national research study. The study aims to gain insight into, and increase the understanding of young people's health and well being, health behaviours and their social context. There are 43 countries participating in this long term study of the health promoting behaviour of school-aged children. All UK countries are involved as well as countries across Europe and North America.

The Scottish survey for Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) is commissioned by NHS Health Scotland and carried out by the Child and Adolescent Health Research Unit (CAHRU) at the University of Edinburgh. CAHRU is also the international co-ordinating centre for HBSC.

The first cross-national survey was conducted in 1983/84, the second in 1985/86 and since then data collection has been carried out every four years using a common research protocol. Six Scottish surveys have been conducted: 1986 (regional sample), 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006. Preparations are now underway for the 2010 survey, the seventh in the Scottish series.

HBSC’s contribution to understanding the social determinants of child and adolescent health has been recognised in the September 2009 supplement of the International Journal of Public Health.

There is also more information about the Scottish series within the ScotPHO website.
