Collaboration Between the Health and Transport Sectors in Promoting Physical Activity: Examples From European Countries

Physical inactivity is becoming increasingly prevalent in Europe. Yet walking and cycling can play an important role in promoting daily physical activity because they can easily be integrated as forms of transport into daily life at minimal cost.

This project, coordinated by the Institute for Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) at the University of Basel, Switzerland, aimed at producing an overview of European experiences of cooperation among the two sectors.

48 case studies from 11 countries were selected and analysed to make available and share the lessons learnt from them.

The majority of the selected case studies come from western European countries.

The four sectors most often involved are transport, health, public authorities (local or subnational) and the private sector.

About two thirds of the 48 case studies are "behaviour change campaigns" or "engineering or infrastructural measures combined with publicity or motivational measures".

Evaluation and measured outcomes are also taken into account in the analysis.

The identification of directions for next steps is the main outcome of the project.

This project also contributes to the promotion of safe walking and cycling in urban areas, one of the priority issues within the pan-European programme on transport, health and environment (THE PEP).

A full description of the 48 case studies analysed is also available.
