British Waterways is the organisation responsible for maintaining 2,200 miles (3,540 km) of this inland waterway network today so that people can use it for a wide range of leisure activities.
Inland waterways have an important role to play in a community's health, wellbeing and education. They are a unique educational resource and can stimulate enormous curiosity and interest.
The WOW (Wild Over Waterways) partnership was established by British Waterways, the Waterways Trust and the Inland Waterways Association as a way for children to discover the waterways, their history, and the fun and fascination they offer today. The WOW website provides a range of resources to promote the educational and recreational opportunities available on and along the many miles of waterways and towpaths in Scotland.
British Waterways is able to work with local authorities, landowners, schools, community groups and the voluntary sector to maintain and sustain a conducive environment that enables everyone, young and old, active and inactive, to access opportunities for walking, cycling, horse riding and boating.
