Because I'm Worth It

This detailed report by Professor Celia Brackenridge reviews research on participation in sport and other physical activity by women, particularly mid-life women, and draws out policy implications.

The purpose of this study was to review and critique the literature on women’s participation in sport and other physical activity to add to our understanding of and inform policy in this area. It also identifies possible areas for further research. The study arose from recognition by sportscotland that participation rates by females are comparatively low, especially after they leave school.

Whilst this report reviews girls’ participation and some psycho/biological factors, it focuses particularly on sport (including team sport) and other physical activity among mid-life adult women. In order to make sense of these issues, a lifecourse approach is taken. Where relevant, comparisons with international data are offered.
