Attitudes, Awareness and Knowledge of Child Healthy Weight.

NHS Health Scotland published this report in 2009, which focuses on identifying and exploring parental, young people’s and health professionals’ attitudes, awareness and knowledge of child healthy weight.

The report confirms that neither parents nor the young people themselves do not easily recognise when they, the child or young person is overweight. It also provides recommendations on:

  • Providing information on healthy weight and interventions;
  • How to facilitate recruitment.

In addition the study also found that some approaches are more or less acceptable for parents when discussing healthy weight, that minimise parents’ perception of criticism of their parenting skills. For example it appears less challenging to parents to focus or introduce the topic through discussions about increasing levels of physical activity rather than ‘healthy eating’.
