At Least Five a Week

A key source of evidence on the impact of physical activity and its relationship to health.

Chief Medical Officer

The Department of Health Chief Medical Officer Report (2004) sets out the latest research evidence of the benefits of physical activity for health. The document is aimed at those concerned with formulating and implementing policies or programmes that utilise the promotion of physical activity, sport, exercise and active travel to achieve health gain.

Policy and practice

The extensive evidence reviewed in this report reinforces the view that physical inactivity is one of the major contributory factors to the rise in chronic disease (cardiovascular disease, obesity and overweight, musculoskeletal disorders, psychological wellbeing and mental illness, cancers). It is clear that the promotion of active lifestyles must be an important part of national and local health improvement strategies.

Contribution to Making Scotland More Active

This report provides the user with accessible and clear evidence that can contribute to planning and reviewing national and local action to promote physical activity across the life course. It sets out the benefits of physical activity from childhood through to older adults
