Active Schools Network Evaluation Year Two (2005/2006): Loughborough Summary Report and Sport Scotland Response

A review of the Active Schools Network in its second year (2005/2006). Reports successes and weaknesses of the network in terms of delivery and participation.

This sportscotland report (2007) evaluates the efficacy of the Active Schools Network in Scotland in its second year.

Findings:  The report establishes that physical activity sessions has risen by 17% and the average number of session leaders per school has risen by 28% over the two years of the network existence.  A decrease in the gender difference in physical activity uptake was reported, with females increasing their participation and a slight decrease in male participation. However overall participation remains approximatle average, with 50% of females and 47 % of males meeting the 60 minutes daily activity. The report highlights concerns about the uptake of physical activity by difficult to reach groups.  There appears to good growth in Primary Schools, however growth in Secondary Schools appears to be sporadic and there are concerns over the sustainability of the work. Active Schools Coordinators (Secondary) [ASC(S)] reported that their one day a week devoted to the network was not sufficient in order to successfully fulfill the remit of the role.

Suggestions:  The report suggests that inactive groups should be specifically targeted in order to address the ‘culture of inactivity’ of some groups.  ACS(S) should be assisted in order to become more efficient and effective.
