Active Nation: Creating a Games Health Legacy for Scotland.

The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow represents for the whole of Scotland a ‘once-in-a-generation’ opportunity to bring about a major cultural shift and a significant improvement in the nation’s health.

Our Active Nation:

Active Nation is a key programme within the Games Legacy Plan. The focus is on physical activity in its broadest sense (walking, cycling, jogging, sport, dancing, gardening etc). Its ambition is to encourage people across Scotland to become more physically active in their everyday lives in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games and beyond.

Active Nation will help accelerate the progress towards achieving the national target to get 50 per cent of Scottish adults and 80 per cent of children up to the recommended levels of physical activity by 2022.

The initiative builds on existing national physical activity and sport strategies – Let’s Make Scotland More Active’ and Reaching Higher’ and will work in conjunction with the Scottish Government’s ‘Take Life On’ Health and Wellbeing campaign to promote a healthier, more active lifestyle to Scots.

Added Value:

The ‘added value’ of Active Nation is the development and implementation of a national marketing campaign, essentially a call to action, which will motivate people of all ages and abilities to get ready for the Games by setting a personal goal to become more physically active.

Partnership Approach:

The programme will be delivered in partnership with local authorities, health boards, sports bodies, voluntary organisations, businesses and others. It will build on existing programmes and initiatives to a large extent, but it is anticipated that the campaign will also generate new partnerships and innovative ideas.

The success of Active Nation, in terms of achieving behaviour change , particularly amongst our primary target audience of the least active, depends ultimately on stakeholder engagement and their continued and active involvement and support.

Stakeholder Toolkit:

stakeholder toolkit has been developed to provide partners and practitioners at a national and local level with useful information and downloads that will support them integrate and promote Active Nation through their work. The toolkit contains everything from an overview of the Active Nation campaign to downloadable tools such as brand guidelines, photography, press releases , online ads, empty belly posters, and presentations.
