Consultation launched on children’s health and physical activity

ukactive has launched a new consultation that will help to shape the future of children’s physical activity across the UK. The consultation will focus on developing opportunities in three key areas: the organisations and institutions that children and young people experience, the physical environment that children and young people grow up in and the social environment that children interact with. ukactive wants written evidence which captures the views of children, young people, parents, teachers, activity providers, social workers, policy experts, business leaders, healthcare professionals and anyone else with a stake in children’s health to help plot the next chapter in the health of Britain’s children. The deadline for responses is Friday 1 June 2018. More information is available below:

Scottish Government consultation on national obesity strategy

The Scottish Government is seeking responses to a consultation on a range of actions to improve diet and weight in Scotland. Alongside the launch, it announced funding of £42 million over the next 5 years to expand services. For physical activity, the consultation sets out ambitions to: •increase investment in active travel and link this with efforts to support weight management activity •improve planning systems to create enabling spaces for physical activity •the continuation of existing programmes, eg, Active Schools and Daily Mile to maintain physical activity and a healthy weight. The consultation document asks: How can our work to encourage physical activity contribute most effectively to tackling obesity? Sport for everyone - Consultation phase 2

A call has been made for written views by the Scottish Parliament and Health and Sport Committee as part of phase 2 of its Sport for Everyone Inquiry. The Committee is keen to receive responses which focus on grassroots sport and the importance of developing strategies to remove barriers to participation. It is also interested in hearing views on how Scotland might increase sport and physical activity participation rates across all groups and sectors of society. Responses could address the following questions: 1. Can you provide examples where a community-based approach has been successful in removing barriers to participation in sport and physical activity? 2. What were the key ingredients to that success? 3. Were there any approaches that were particularly successful in increasing participation among certain social groups, like women, ethnic minorities, certain age-groups? 4.To what extent are these approaches unique to a particular area and set of circumstances, or replicable in other parts of the country? The call for views will close on 30 June. Read more below:

National Play Strategy: Review of Inclusive Play in Scotland

A Review of Inclusive Play in Scotland was identified as a high priority within the National Play Strategy Action Plan (2013), recognising that all children in Scotland have the right to play. The Plan particularly mentions the play rights of disabled children and young people and those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
