Scottish Workplace Journey Challenge, 2018

Following its success last year, the Scottish Workplace Journey Challenge is returning in March. Join the challenge as an individual or as part of your workplace and be part of a movement in Scotland to get as many people as possible commuting by foot, bike, public transport or lift-sharing. Taking part is a great way to get active, reduce carbon emissions and save money! Simply register online to log the journeys you make by foot, bike, public transport and car-share. Over £2000 worth of prizes are up for grabs, including cinema tickets, Kindles and high street vouchers. Register before 1st March to enter the Early Bird prize draw where you can win one of ten £20 Wiggle vouchers. A Nation with Ambition - The Government’s programme for Scotland 2017-18

The Scottish Government has launched its Programme for Government 2017-18 which sets out the actions it will take in the forthcoming year. A Nation With Ambition outlines the Scottish Government’s commitments to tackling the challenge of poor public health with new initiatives to reduce obesity, boost active travel, improve mental health and tackle air pollution. It plans to build an Active Nation, boosting investment in walking and cycling and putting active travel at the heart of our transport planning. Actions will include: • making towns and cities friendlier and safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists by increasing investment that supports active travel from £40 million to £80 million per year from 2018-19 • appointing an Active Nation Commissioner to ensure delivery of world-class active travel infrastructure across Scotland • stepping up promotion of the use of electric bicycles to ensure as many people as possible can benefit from active travel • delivering projects which help older people benefit from our network of walking and cycling routes. Teaching aids push active lifestyle to mark third Commonwealth Games anniversary

Teaching materials to encourage an active lifestyle are to be unveiled to mark the third anniversary of Glasgow's Commonwealth Games. Called the "Thrive tool kit", it will be promoted at six roadshows across Scotland by a group of ambassadors who encourage physical activity. This toolkit will be publicly available and will contain teaching materials and resources to allow as many people as possible to benefit from the learning gained from Legacy 14 projects. National Charity Partnership launches challenge to help people kick start healthier habits

The Tesco, Diabetes UK and BHF national charity partnership has revamped and relaunched its online Goal Setter tool to give people extra support to change their lifestyle. The Let’s Do This 8 Week Challenge allows users to set and track their health-related goals over an eight-week period. It gives users a more tailored experience and is designed to encourage lasting lifestyle change. Goals focus on everyday changes, such as becoming more active and improving diet. The 8 Week Challenge also contains achievable fitness tips, healthy recipes health-related inspiration to keep people motivated. Read more below:

The Heart of an Active Nation

The Sport and Recreation Alliance has released its new strategy for 2017-2021 called The Heart of an Active Nation to create a vibrant sport and recreation sector which is fit for the future. The strategy outlines its ambition to create a vibrant sport and recreation sector reflecting the changing demographics, environments, resources and technologies that are happening. The vision of the strategy is an active nation through sport and recreation. It describes a world that the alliance wants to see, because of the important role of sport and recreation on physical and mental wellbeing, the economy and the development of society. The strategy sets out four objectives which will be the main focus of work and receive the majority of resources: Demonstrate the economic and social value of sport and recreation. Make sport and recreation volunteering more representative and more accessible. Work together with the sector to improve the availability, accessibility and quality of sport and recreation for children and young people. Make our members and us fit for the future. Children's activity across the globe

Report cards on the physical activity of children and youth across the world have been released revealing how countries compare in getting their youth active. Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance was responsible for organising the cards which graded countries on nine common indicators, overall physical activity, organised sport participation, active play, active transportation, sedentary behavior, family and peers, school community and the built environment and government strategies and investment. The cards reflect standardised grading across countries ranging from A= excellent to F = failing. In the UK, the grades given for overall physical activity are: England D Scotland F Wales D There is no data available for Northern Ireland.

Cycling taskforce in Scotland

Ambitious cycling plans in Scotland are being reinvigorated with the introduction of a new taskforce. Transport Minister Humza Yousaf announced the plans for a taskforce, the main aim of which will be to drive forward ambitious cycling infrastructure such as segregated cycle paths, at the Active Travel Summit last week. The Minister also unveiled details of the latest round of the multi-million pound Community Links PLUS competition which seeks ambitious design projects that restore balance in Scotland’s streets in favour of people walking and cycling. The new taskforce, chaired by Transport Scotland, will begin its work following the publication of the updated Cycling Action Plan for Scotland in December. Key organisations such as COSLA, the Society of Chief Officers of Transportation in Scotland and other delivery partners will be invited to take an active part in the group.
