Looking for new and ambitious Community Links projects in Scotland

Community Links 2018/19 funding is now open for applications, and this year Sustrans are looking for ambitious, inclusive projects that will make Scottish towns and cities friendlier and safer places for people to walk and cycle. Projects that meet the following aims will be eligible for funding: - Create infrastructure that enables people to walk, cycle or use another active travel mode as their preferred mode of travel for everyday journeys - Meet the needs of communities, providing people with the opportunity to shape their local environment and link the places they live with the places they want to go - Raise the standards by using innovative and imaginative approaches for community and business engagement, design and construction of walking and/or cycling projects - Encourage placemaking that promotes greater use of public space and higher levels of active travel - Create an enabling context/environment for active travel that facilitates the delivery of other projects Find out more here:

Scotland’s Mental Health Charter for Physical Activity and Sport

Physical activity through sport or recreation has been proven to have a positive impact on physical and mental health and wellbeing. Supported by funds from Comic Relief, SAMH embarked on a project to understand why people experiencing a mental health problem can find it difficult to participate in physical activity. This was particularly important as there is much evidence to suggest there is a link between regular physical activity and improved mental health. Work on the Charter was launched by SAMH Ambassador, Sir Chris Hoy, in 2016 and was developed through the People Active for Change & Equality (PACE) project with representatives from: NHS Health Scotland Sportscotland SPORTA Scottish Student Sport North Lanarkshire Leisure KA Leisure Glasgow Sport The result is Scotland’s Mental Health Charter for Physical Activity and Sport which sets out how sport and recreation organisations can adopt positive mental health practice to ensure everyone can engage, participate and achieve in physical activity and sport. Applications are now open for the Young People’s Sport Panel!

Sport Scotland are looking for a group of young people to speak up for sport and work with them and Young Scot to help influence and shape sport in Scotland, and they would value your support to spread the word! Sport Funding to Increase

The Scottish Government will increase sportscotland’s core funding by £2 million in 2018-19, from £29.7 million to £31.7 million, to prioritise the development of sport within Scotland. In addition to this, the Scottish Government has also pledged to underwrite any potential shortfall in National Lottery funding for sportscotland of up to £3.4 million. Read the full story below:

Nature Walks for Wellbeing Pilot Launched

In partnership with NHS Forth Valley, Scottish Waterways Trust has launched a new pilot programme to offer outdoor nature therapy to adults in Falkirk, along the town’s canals and surrounding greenspace. Nature Walks for Wellbeing, funded by The Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland, is a programme of green exercise, health walks and nature-based therapy activities aimed at helping adults in Falkirk who are living with poor mental health, and may be experiencing exclusion and isolation. The 2 10 week-long pilot programmes aim to improve community health and wellbeing through a vibrant range of activities, including sensory explorations, mindful discovery, natural history learning, and outdoor physical activities such as yoga. Participants, who are referred onto the programme through the Woodlands Resource Centre in Falkirk Community Hospital, will also get to try new experiences and learn new skills. Led by NHS clinical staff and a Community Engagement Officer from Scottish Waterways Trust, Nature Walks for Wellbeing are delivered in 90 minute sessions which enhance mood and self-esteem, and provide a wide range of physical and mental health benefits, along with reducing social isolation. In total, 30 people are set to benefit from the initial pilot programme in Falkirk, and Scottish Waterways Trust is fundraising to continue the project once the pilot programmes have ended. Introducing Ramblers Scotland's Out There Campaign

Through events, press releases, social media and email bulletins over the next few years, Out There will offer fans of Scotland’s outdoors a wide array of ways to celebrate and protect all that makes our country so special. Whiile Out There is for everyone – from those who are taking their first steps into the countryside to hardy hillwalkers – there will be a particular focus on encouraging non-Ramblers members and decision-makers to appreciate what makes Scottish walking so special. As the challenge organiser you choose the virtual route to walk, when to start and when to end the challenge, and who is allowed to register to take part. Daily steps walked in the real world are mapped onto a centralised virtual route. Competing in teams encourages teamwork and a healthy sense of competition. A Nation with Ambition - The Government’s programme for Scotland 2017-18

The Scottish Government has launched its Programme for Government 2017-18 which sets out the actions it will take in the forthcoming year. A Nation With Ambition outlines the Scottish Government’s commitments to tackling the challenge of poor public health with new initiatives to reduce obesity, boost active travel, improve mental health and tackle air pollution. It plans to build an Active Nation, boosting investment in walking and cycling and putting active travel at the heart of our transport planning. Actions will include: • making towns and cities friendlier and safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists by increasing investment that supports active travel from £40 million to £80 million per year from 2018-19 • appointing an Active Nation Commissioner to ensure delivery of world-class active travel infrastructure across Scotland • stepping up promotion of the use of electric bicycles to ensure as many people as possible can benefit from active travel • delivering projects which help older people benefit from our network of walking and cycling routes. The Daily Mile to be rolled out beyond schools in Scotland

All Scottish schools are being encouraged to take part in the Daily Mille and the Scottish Government is encouraging schools, nurseries, colleges and universities across the country to join in to make Scotland a Daily Mile nation. Currently, around 800 Scottish primary schools take part in the initiative which encourages people to walk, jog or run a mile every day. It is now being rolled out beyond the school sector.

Step into a healthier workplace this autumn

Paths for All have launched their autumn Step Count Challenge, which begins on Monday 30th October. For four weeks, teams of five from workplaces across Scotland will make a change by walking more, tracking and recording their daily step count, and taking part in weekly challenges with the chance to win prizes. Using their own pedometers, mobile apps and fitness trackers, participants enter in teams of 5 and record their steps whilst increasing their activity levels by walking to work, going for a lunchtime stroll, and using the stairs rather than the lift. Everyone taking part records their daily steps on an online user account, where they can also share comments with their team and track the team's progress on a leader board. Paths for All has been running the challenge for five years, and over this time more than eight and a half billion steps, equal to almost four million miles, have been recorded. During this year’s spring challenge, over 963 teams, consisting of 4,663 participants, took part. People who took part in the spring challenge commented that “It was great fun, got me away from my desk every lunch time!” and “It was extremely enjoyable, and was a great initiative that helped bond our team together”. The outcome is the challenge makes a difference to people’s health. The University of Edinburgh carried out research into participants’ physical activity levels before and after the challenge. They found that those taking part walked over one and half hours more and sat for six hours less each week*. You can register now and purchase pedometers for your workplace at:

The National Walking and Cycling Network in Scotland helps increase physical activity say nearly 80% of users

A new report on Scotland’s National Walking and Cycling Network shows almost four fifths of users believe that the network of paths helps them increase their physical activity. Over half (52%) stated that the existence of Scotland’s National Walking and Cycling Network allowed them to actively travel on foot or by bike rather than taking the car. Read the full story here:

Health Walks are helping to reconnect the Highlands

Walking for Health project, Step It Up Highland have added two new case studies to their growing series. Both highlight how Health Walks play an important community development role helping people living in rural areas to become more active and socially connected. Case study 11 - Tackling social isolation Mallaig area Walking Group explains how the weekly Health Walk in Mallaig, Morar and Arisaig has brought people together. Rotating each week between the three areas gives everyone an opportunity to visit new locations. Car sharing is popular, along with a visit to a local café at the end of the walk. One 86-year-old walker said, “I am so much more confident now in my ability to walk and have discovered the joy of using walking poles. I would never have done this without the security of a led walk in the company of others.” Read more below:

It is important that these individuals can be recognised for the contribution they make to the vibrancy and diversity of sport in Scotland. This is your opportunity to nominate the most worthy individuals within your sport and your community for a UK Honours Award! The Scottish Sports Association (SSA), the independent and collective voice of Scottish Governing Bodies of sport, our members and the Scottish Government are working in partnership to identify and recognise the individuals who make a real and innovative difference to sport in Scotland. We are particularly looking for those who have made a difference to club and community sport, and need your help to identify and nominate these individuals from within your community. Everyday Adventures

Mark Beaumont, long distance cyclist, has joined forces with Sustrans to encourage others to enjoy short ‘everyday adventures’ on the National Cycle Network in Scotland. The new short film shows the sporting star’s non-competitive side as he moves through various guises, from stylish corporate Brompton rider to about-town family man with toddler in tow and then leisure cyclist escaping the city. The video is intended to promote accessible, everyday leisure cycling routes around Scotland’s towns and cities, and to provide inspiration by showcasing some of the iconic landmarks and visitor attractions which are often only a short bike ride away. Cycling Scotland's Development Grant Fund Invites Applications

Cycling Scotland welcomes applications to its Cycle Friendly Development Grant Fund 2017/18 from community groups across Scotland. The Transport Scotland funded scheme is intended to encourage cycling in local communities, thereby increasing the number of local people making journeys by bike. Constituted community groups and organisations who are actively working towards Cycle Friendly status can apply for grants of up to £20,000 to facilitate projects which support improvement to cycling facilities and infrastructure. Examples of eligible expenditure include: • Procuring bicycles to improve community access to bikes, tackling inequality. • Installing or enhancing cycle parking to increase capacity and/or security. •Creating maintenance hubs (including procurement of tools, but not consumables). Although capital improvements will be at the core of successful proposals, Cycling Scotland will also consider funding complimentary activities, such as: • Monitoring and evaluation. • Cycle training. • Maintenance training. • Sessional work and support. • Promotional and engagement activities. New Strategic Plan Launched

Scottish Disability Sport (SDS) has launched a new strategic plan which will direct the work of the Association through to 2021 and beyond. The plan, entitled “Inspiring Through Inclusion 2017-2021“, has been developed following a comprehensive consultation process with key partners and strategic bodies across Scotland. This Association’s vision is to lead inclusive sport in Scotland for participants and athletes with a physical, sensory or learning disability. Read more:

Still too many barriers to participation in sport

A Scottish Parliament committee examining the levels of participation in sport says there is still work to be done in encouraging more people to take part in grassroots sport, over two years after Glasgow hosted the Commonwealth Games. The finding is included in an interim report of the committee’s inquiry into barriers to sport participation, the Commonwealth Games legacy and barriers to sport. Members of the committee visited Community Sports Hubs around the country and the committee also carried out a survey of over 3,000 people to gather views as to why people either do or do not participate in sport or physical activity. The biggest barrier to participation was a perceived lack of time. A shortage of local facilities and cost were also seen as significant barriers. The survey revealed that females (25%) were almost twice as likely as males (13%) to not take part in regular sport or physical activity. Feeling self-conscious and carer or family commitments were the leading reasons of non-participation for females. Read more:

Step into a healthier workplace this spring

Paths for All have just launched their spring Step Count Challenge. Teams from workplaces across Scotland will be challenging themselves to walk more and feel the difference. The challenge supports staff to find simple and sustainable ways of building a little more activity into their working day including; walking to work, going for a lunchtime stroll, walking meetings and using the stairs rather than the lift. The challenge starts on the 1 May and runs for 8 weeks. Participants enter in teams of 5 and record their steps using a pedometer, app or device. Everyone gets a user account where they record their daily steps, share comments with their team and track the team's progress on a leaderboard. There will be the usual competitions, prizes and more. Paths for All has been running the challenge for five years now and in that time over 18,000 people have taken part. Together, they have counted more than eight and a half billion steps, equal to almost four million miles. The outcome is the challenge makes a difference to people’s health.
